Autumn 2008

The air is crisp, frost is on the grass and snow flurries are already flying in our northern climes. Like a switch turning on, our phones here at The Liz begin ringing off the hook! October through May is our high season here at the Royal Elizabeth. Tucson offers visitors some of the best autumn weather anywhere. Our local arts and music scenes come alive, restaurants are bustling and festivals and events abound.

Note that our IRON HORSE HOUSE is available for longer term stays this autumn. The nightly rate is $285 and we kindly ask for a three-night minimum stay for the Iron Horse House. We are happy to negotiate a rate with you for weekly or monthly stays. You will have a beautifully furnished historic bungalow in a great walkable neighborhood all to yourselves. You may use the heated pool and spa at The Liz whenever you'd like and our famous Royal Elizabeth breakfast is available to Iron Horse House guests during times when we have space available in our dining parlor. Check with us on our expected breakfast seating availability.

Special Fall Events to Consider...

(More events will be added as they are announced. Check back on occassion.)

Halloween Weekend (October 31-November 2)

Stay at The Liz on Hallow's Eve weekend. There's a lot going on in the neighborhood including a variety of historic downtown walking ghost tours, children's Halloween parade and more. Join Chuck and Jeff on Halloween Night at the historic and haunted Hotel Congress for the much celebrated NIGHTMARE ON CONGRESS STREET. It's a five-minute walk from the Inn and offers an abundance of costume contests, live music, freaks and geeks and all sorts of costumed glory. This year features national and local live music talents on two stages. Bands with names like: Ted Leo and the pharmacists!, Oh My God!, The Voodoo Organist! Chango Malo! Titus Andronicus The Jons the Zsa Zsas! and many many more! Stay a minimum of two nights this weekend and we'll include two tickets to Nightmare on Congress Street in the package!

Dia de los Muertos and the All Souls Procession (November 7-9)

This is the most quintessential Tucson thing-to-do in our opinion. The Latin American "Day of the Dead" is a solem but whimsical celebration of those people, things and ideas in our lives that have gone on before us. Stay at The Liz for the weekend and join us on Sunday night as we lead our guests along the two-mile long, 10,000 participant Procession. You'll be amazed with the many colorful costumes, stilt walkers, fire dancers, Latin drummers, handmade floats and many other individual means of expression. Add your wish to the "prayer urn" that will be hoisted over the crowd by crane and set ablaze, releasing thousands of thoughts by smoke into the Universe.

Fourth Avenue Street Fair (December 12-14)

The widely-popular Fourth Avenue Street fair draws visitors and vendors from around the country and around town.
The Street Fair takes place between Ninth Street and University Blvd. along Fourth Avenue--just a 5-10 minute walk from The Liz. Free to the public, the Fourth Avenue Street Fair brings together 400+ arts and crafts booths, 35+ food vendors, 2 stages, street musicians, food, jugglers, street performers, face painting, balloons, and tons of other fun activities, then packs them into three days of celebration. The Fourth Avenue Street Fair began in 1970 when Fourth Avenue merchants put tables in front of their stores to attract customers before the holidays. From that beginning it has developed into one of the premier street fairs in the nation, drawing crowds of 200,000 to 350,000 and ranking as one of the top visual arts fairs in the country. Come for the shopping: 400+ artists booths featuring arts and crafts that cover the spectrum from fine art to country crafts. Glass, clay, wood, clothing, metal, jewelry, pre-packaged food, all hand made and on sale by the artist/craftsperson. Come for the food: 35+ food vendors selling an eclectic mix of good things to eat. Greek, Mexican, Thai, BBQ, fry bread, funnel cakes, chicken, and more. Come for the music: 2 stages with something for everyone!
